Queer STS members Susanne Kink, Thomas Berger and Anita Thaler (from left to right) have been interviewed by colleagues from Technical University of Graz to talk about societal aspects of technology.
In the video, we are talking about:
- the queer potential of the internet (from Donna Haraway’s “A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century,” to Rena Bivens’ analysis of the new 56 gender possibilities of facebook: “The gender binary will not be deprogrammed: Ten years of coding gender on Facebook“)
- and that despite its potential, technologies (like internet, robotics, etc.) tend to reproduce social and gender hierarchies, because social differences may not be biologically justified, but they are as well socially constructed and for instance gender stereotypes are inscribed in technologies (for instance Jennifer Robertson states that “humanoid robots are the vanguard of posthuman sexism“); then about
- how the future of technologies will shape working and living of the humans (more about that in CGP Grey`s video “Humans Need Not Apply“)
- and the ultimate vision of Queer STS that everybody who is affected by technologies, should be able to participate in the design process of technologies (yes we know that means everybody!):
